How do you make sure people help you if you are in need?



What can you do when you need help? Know that the default might be for potential helpers to ignore the situation.

Make eye-contact if you can, be explicit that you need help, get the attention of one individual person and grow the helping base from there. If you've taken a first aid course, you'll know that they teach the first responder to say "YOU! Call 9-1-1!" This helps to break people out of the bystander effect: it helps to get the event noticed, and interpreted as an emergency.

With a clear directive on how to help, people are more likely to assume responsibility.
