Glycolysis occurs in the cytosol, which begins the degradation process by breaking down glucose into two molecules of a compound called pyruvate. The Krebs cycle occurs in the matrix of the mitochondrion. The electron transport chain occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion.
